Leonardslee Gardens’ Community Volunteer Initiative
About the Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens’ Community Volunteer Initiative
Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens near Horsham, the Grade I Listed woodland gardens in West Sussex, has a range of volunteer opportunities. In an era where community service is integral to the preservation of our national heritage, the estate encourages those living locally to consider volunteering at this historic 240-acre estate.
Just a decade ago, the future looked bleak for Leonardslee, once described as ‘the finest woodland gardens in England’, renowned for its rhododendrons and spring displays, and home to one of the best and most intact Pulhamite rock gardens.
But in recent years it had declined. Developed and tended by generations of the Loder family, the estate had gradually been sold off and eventually the gardens, too, had to go. And, when the new owner was refused planning permission to develop the site, he just shut the gate and left. The gardens seemed doomed.
“At that point, Leonardslee was considered a famous but lost garden; spoken of sadly and in hushed tones,” says Head Gardener Jamie Harris.
It lay abandoned for nearly 10 years, but in 2017, the Streeter family bought and rescued the gardens, and after a major investment programme over nearly two years, the estate opened once again to the public.
Community Volunteering
Leonardslee today stands as a testament to the power of community. As one of the UK’s most cherished national gems, Leonardslee offers a unique opportunity for individuals to now actively participate in its preservation and growth, supporting the full-time team working on the estate.
For generations, Leonardslee has been a source of pleasure and inspiration, housing threatened plant species that were first introduced in the early 1800s. Today, the estate stands as a beacon of conservation and community service, ensuring that the legacy of these gardens continues to thrive.
The call for volunteers has already resonated with many, offering a chance to be part of a major conservation project and community asset. From guiding visitors through the picturesque landscapes to assisting with the care of the estate’s diverse wildlife, volunteer opportunities at Leonardslee are wide ranging and varied.
Engaging Tours and Conservation Efforts
Volunteers at Leonardslee play a pivotal role in enhancing the visitor experience. As garden guides, they provide engaging tours, sharing the rich history and beauty of Leonardslee. They also help in conservation efforts, identifying areas of wear and tear and ensuring the safety of all who visit.
Driving Accessibility and Inclusivity
Recognising the challenges posed by the garden’s steep slopes and hills, Leonardslee introduced golf buggies to assist visitors with limited mobility. Volunteer buggy drivers are at the forefront of this initiative, ensuring everyone has the chance to explore the gardens in their entirety.
A Haven for Wildlife
Leonardslee is not just a garden; it’s a sanctuary for wildlife. From rare birds and native mammals, such as deer, badgers and the estate’s renowned wallabies, the gardens are teeming with life. Volunteers dedicated to animal care can assist with the wallaby and chicken enclosures, playing a crucial role in the well-being of these creatures.
Hospitality and Art Combined
The spirit of community service extends to the estate’s hospitality sector. Volunteers in The Clocktower Café and the retail section provide a warm welcome to all, ensuring every visitor feels at home. Additionally, the newly introduced Leonardslee Gardens Art Gallery and Sculpture Park offer art enthusiasts a chance to contribute to an exciting project, enriching both the gardens and the local community.
Why Volunteer at Leonardslee?
Volunteering has never been more rewarding, says estate general manager Adam Streeter. At Leonardslee, every volunteer becomes part of a dedicated team, meeting people from all walks of life and forging new friendships. The experience not only enhances communication skills but also offers a daily dose of the great outdoors. And as a token of appreciation, volunteers enjoy discounts across the gardens and garden membership.
Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when individuals come together. For those seeking volunteer jobs near them, Leonardslee offers a chance to make a real difference.
